Old town of Mariehamn
The old town of Mariehamn is small but charming. Stroll through its streets to enjoy Åland’s tranquil atmosphere and seaside beauty. At the heart of town, you’ll find historic buildings, cozy cafés and charming boutiques selling local handicrafts. Follow the beautifully preserved wooden streets down to the harbor and take in the sailboats and sparkling sea views.
Öfvergårds apple orchard
Around 70% of Finland’s apples come from Åland! About 25 minutes from Mariehamn is the Öfvergårds apple orchard, where you can learn about apple picking and try different apple juice varieties. Öfvergårds apple juices have won awards in Finland, Sweden and Scandinavia. The archipelago’s special climate makes the apples especially tasty.
Eckerö region
The Eckerö region, located in western Åland, is rich in history and culture. Here you’ll find the Jakt- och Fiskemuseum, showcasing the region’s natural heritage. You can also relax on sandy beaches, play a round of golf at Eckerö Golf, go kayaking or visit an art gallery in the historic Eckerö Post & Tullhus.
Käringsund Wildlife Safari
Käringsund Wild Safari is a one-of-a-kind wildlife park in Eckerö where visitors can get up close to the animals. The tour takes place in a safari bus that seats up to 40 people and pauses at each enclosure for a closer look. Along the way, you may spot large herds of red deer, fallow deer, wild boars and ostriches, and you can pet or feed llamas and other friendly animals. The guided safari lasts about 45 minutes and departs from the area near the Jakt- och Fiskemuseum in Eckerö.
Käringsund village
Käringsunds Gästhamn is known for its beautiful nature, peaceful atmosphere and long sandy beach – perfect for relaxing or swimming. A stroll along the harbor feels like stepping into a postcard, with colorful wooden houses and sparkling sea views creating an idyllic scene. Käringsund is also connected to Astrid Lindgren’s work: the TV series based on her book Vi på Saltkråkan was filmed here.
Golfer’s paradise
Åland offers great golfing opportunities in its beautiful nature. Ålands Golfklubb in Kastelholm is one of the best golf destinations in Finland, with two 18‑hole courses, Slottsbanan and Kungsbanan, and the shorter course Prinsessan. The landscape combines beauty and cultural heritage, offering a truly special playing experience. Eckerö Golf in western Åland has an 18‑hole course and practice area, with routes suitable for players of all levels through fields, forests and peaceful scenery.

Åland Maritime Museum
Åland’s maritime history is truly unique as it was the last region where wooden sailing ships carried cargo to Australia. The museum is home to the sailing ship Pommern, a historic four‑masted barque and one of Åland’s most important treasures. Exhibitions cover shipbuilding, navigation, motor and sailing vessels and maritime safety. Children will love the museum’s interactive features. The friendly mascot, Ruby the rat, guides them through the exhibits. There’s also a large playroom and plenty of fun, educational activities. Kastelholm castle
Kastelholm Castle takes visitors back to the 14th century. Swedish kings once ruled here, criminals were imprisoned, and even witch trials took place within its walls. Today, the castle houses a museum where you can explore historic halls, hear stories of past power and daily life, and enjoy views of Åland’s beautiful nature from the ramparts. It is also one of the few remaining medieval castles in Finland.
Smakbyn restaurant and winery
Smakbyn is where Åland’s flavours come to life – a restaurant and artisan winery created by the renowned Finnish chef Michael Björklund next to Kastelholm castle. Here you can enjoy seasonal dishes made from local produce, craft wines and schnapps inspired by Nordic cuisine. Browse the souvenir shop, pick up fresh baked goods and peek behind the scenes of winemaking. At Smakbyn every bite is authentic and memorable.
Boat tours
Boat tours depart from Mariehamn on the 119‑year‑old vessel Sunnan II, taking you through the stunning Åland archipelago. The ship offers lunch and dinner cruises showcasing local flavors. On board you’ll find a restaurant, bar, and three cozy lounges, including a heated wind‑protected outer deck, so you can enjoy the sea and scenery in any weather. The journey begins at Sjökvarteret harbor, home to traditional boat workshops and the Salt handicraft shop.
Walking and cycling tours
Åland is perfect for hiking and cycling, offering peaceful routes through the islands’ beautiful nature and historic sites. The popular 65 km Old Postal Route takes you on a two- to three-day cycling journey past major attractions, including the Eckerö post house, the churches in Hammarland and Kastelholm Castle. For walkers, we recommend the Lemlandsleden trail, which winds through villages, forests and coastal cliffs. It’s an ideal way to explore Åland at your own pace while staying close to nature.
