The Stockholm Archipelago Trail connects several islands and offers easy access to nature and local villages. National Geographic has even named the Stockholm Archipelago and its extraordinary trail one of the world’s top 25 destinations for 2025.

Fishing
Fishing is a relaxing way to experience the archipelago. Fish from the shore, a boat or one of the many piers while enjoying the peaceful surroundings. Also, there are many BBQ stations at campsites. Common catches include perch, pike and sea trout.
Island hopping
Island hopping in the archipelago is one of the best ways to explore as much as possible in a short time. There are countless islands worth visiting, but here are a few of the more popular recommendations.

Fjäderholmarna
Fjäderholmarna is one of the closest archipelago islands to Stockholm and the perfect little escape from the city. Just 20 minutes by boat, you’ll find seaside views, cozy spots to explore, and local artists with charming studios and shops across the island.

Gustavsberg
Situated on Värmdö, Gustavsberg acts as a gateway to the outer Stockholm archipelago. Visit the high-end art gallery Artipelag, explore the historic porcelain factory founded in 1825, and wander around the charming harbor area filled with museums, factory outlets, artisan studios, cafés, and cute dining spots.

Grinda
Grinda is the perfect place to experience true Swedish island magic just over an hour from Stockholm. Spend the day swimming, kayaking, exploring nature trails, or simply relaxing by the water. The island also offers cozy hotels, cabins, a campground, and a laid-back archipelago atmosphere.

Bådan Café & Pâtisserie
Bådan Café & Pâtisserie is located inside the Artipelag art museum, and it’s hard to imagine a restaurant with a more beautiful view. From spring through fall, the large outdoor terrace is open, offering afternoon sun and views over Baggensfjärden. The menu may be small, but you’ll find café classics and pancakes for kids. Reservations are not required.

Getting around Stockholm Archipelago
The Stockholm Archipelago is easy to reach from central Stockholm, with several ferries departing daily to different islands. Popular ferry operators include Waxholmsbolaget and Cinderella boats. Since many of the islands are car-free, the best way to explore is by walking or cycling. Bicycles can also be rented on many of the larger islands.
