Kama
Kama is something almost every local child has grown up with. It’s a finely milled mix of roasted grains like barley, rye, wheat, and peas, usually enjoyed with kefir or yogurt.
Black rye bread
Black rye bread is a true local delicacy, especially when served warm with a generous spread of homemade butter and a sprinkle of salt flakes.
Pea soup
Pea soup is a traditional Estonian comfort food, especially popular on cold winter days. It’s warm and hearty, made with dried peas and often flavoured with smoked meat.
Jellied meat
Known as sült in Estonian, this traditional dish is made from slow-cooked pork set in its own jelly. It’s typically served cold, often during holidays or family gatherings.
Sprat sandwich
No Estonian Independence Day is complete without a sprat sandwich. This open-faced classic is made with black rye bread, marinated sprats, and sliced boiled egg.
