Silja Europa`s technical failure was caused by broken starboard rudderstock, the ship will not operate at least for a week, announced Tallink Group.
The divers, which inspected the ship found that the technical failure of Silja Europa`s rudder system was caused by the broken starboard rudderstock, which has to be replaced. Manufacturing and installation a new rudderstock will take at least a week.
How the rudderstock got broken is still unclear. The reason will be further investigated.
All departures of Silja Europa are cancelled until 1st of December and tickets bought for those trips are fully refunded. The passengers are contacted by the company directly.
Cruise ferry Silja Europa was on her way from Stockholm to Turku, when technical problems occurred on Sunday afternoon. Due to the quick and professional work of the crew and master, there was no threat to people on board or the ship. The ship, which was secured by a tugboat, arrived today in Turku at 16.30.
There were 1373 passengers and 286 crew members on board. The company offered free meals and cabins for all passengers.
Company is constantly in contact with relevant authorities.
Silja Europa operates on Turku-Stockholm route with one daily departure from both destination harbours.
