Tallink participates in the large international environmental project SPICES

AS Tallink Grupp, Tallink Silja Oy and Tallink Silja AB participate the project SPICES (Supporting Port Innovations and Cities Enhancing Sustainability) submitted in May 2008 by the Union of the Baltic Cities Commission on Environment to the Baltic Sea Region programme 2007-20013 Joint Technical Secretariat in Rostock, Germany.

AS Tallink Grupp`s board member Mr. Andres Hunt said, that as a strong company, Tallink can give a substantial contribution to the environmental care as well as general development of the Baltic Sea region.
„This project has a strong potential for contributing to the sustainable development of the Baltic Sea region and the increasing responsibilities for ports and port cities for the marine status of the Baltic Sea. We welcome warmly the initiative to unite the power of companies and organizations of many countries for this good cause“, said Hunt.

Increasing shipping and maritime tourism symbolize both growing economies as well as increasing potential environmental problems for the region. SPICES aims at minimizing the environmental impact of ports and cities with investments in a sustainable management of Baltic Sea resources and the responsible handling of resources.

The sustainable exposure is regarded from legal, environmental and economical perspective to find suitable investments and effective measures to reach the project’s objectives in a long-term perspective.

SPICES aims at developing a concrete action plan for sustainable ports and cities around the Baltic Sea as well valid for ports and cities in the whole Europe and supporting HELCOM`s Baltic Sea Action Plan and the EU Maritime Policy.
